On designing for quiet rooms

The one rule our creative director has never broken: if an object needs explaining, it is already failing.

The rooms I return to over and over — in houses and galleries, in photographs and memory — share a common refusal. They refuse to perform. You can spend twenty minutes in one and leave without a single object asking for your attention, and yet the room has changed your mood.

A quiet room is not a minimal room

Minimalism often shouts through absence: the single chair, the empty plane. Quietness is different. A quiet room can be full — books, rugs, lamps, a cat — but every object earns its place because it is behaving like itself, not like a photograph of itself.

  1. Choose materials that respond to the light in your climate, not the light in the magazine.
  2. Give tall objects room to breathe; give short objects something to sit beside.
  3. Trust patina. It is the real signature of a well-chosen piece.
